What is Rolfing®
Rolfing® is the brand name of a holistic form of soft tissue bodywork known as Structural Integration. Often it is referred to as Rolfing Structural Integration. A Certified Rolfer® or Certified Advanced Rolfer®, has completed the requisite training from the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration . You may check the Rolf Institute’s website (www.rolf.org) to verify a Rolfer is in good standing with the Institute.
Rolfers work in the connective tissue of the body. These tissues surround muscles, bones, organs and nerves. Ida Rolf, the woman who developed the Rolfing series and format for the work, discovered that when slow steady pressure is applied to the connective tissue, changes occur and tissue can elongate, or provide more support for surrounding structures.. In this way, bodies can become realigned and balanced. By creating more availability in the tissues, flexibility is increased, and balance and posture improve.
“This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself. “- Ida Rolf, founder of the Rolfing® technique
Each Rolfing session builds on the preceding session’s results creating more balance throughout the body as more and more areas are addressed in subsequent sessions. As the connective tissue is worked on, it becomes more supple and supportive helping to realign posture. Often, pain stress and restrictions are resolved. A basic series of 10 sessions is often recommended as a place to start. For those who have completed a ten series, tune-up sessions or an advanced series is recommended.
